Kansas State University’s IGP Institute announces on-site and distance course offerings for professionals in the grain, flour and feed industries.

MANHATTAN, Kan. – “The challenge to feed a growing global population cannot be achieved without a steady and sustainable grain pipeline from the United States to the rest of the world,” says Dirk Maier, IGP Institute director. With that situation in mind, the IGP Institute team members have been busy making plans for 2015 and are excited to announce their new initiatives for the year ahead.

One of the new opportunities on the horizon is the expanded partnership between the IGP Institute and GEAPS (Grain Elevator Processing Society).

“In addition to coordinating distance trainings in grain handling, starting in January, we will also partner with GEAPS to offer online courses and a credential in grain-processing management,” says Mark Fowler, IGP Institute associate director. Expanding these courses to include processing trainings allows the two organizations to leverage the resources and networks for both organizations.

Along with that, in 2015, the IGP Institute is incorporating more blended-learning opportunities for its participants. Blended learning involves participants completing online training prior to coming to the IGP Institute for the hands-on education.
“By delivering the foundational knowledge through distance courses that allows us to spend the majority of the on-site time applying and demonstrating principles in the mill and labs,” Fowler says. He also says there is increased knowledge retention when material is shared with participants over a longer period of time.

“Distance courses allow students to get a theory and feel online. On-site courses are redeveloped to focus on the hands-on applications,” says Mark Fowler, IGP associate director. “We are changing; we are moving forward.”
One of the ways the organization is changing is to restructure some of its trainings for on-site courses. Two of the June courses have been renamed and refocused. The basic milling course is renamed to IGP-KSU Managing Mill Balance and Control. The advanced milling course is renamed to IGP-KSU Milling Practices to Improve Flour Quality.

“Our courses are three and a half days with the majority of the time applying the material hands-on,” Fowler says.

Another new growth opportunity is coming with an expanded offering in the feed manufacturing and grain management trainings. Plans are being made for more feed safety and feed management courses as well as activities related to grain quality management.

Finally, the IGP Institute continues to maintain its high quality grain marketing and risk management offerings. In addition, plans are underway for partnership trainings with the Northern Crops Institute both domestically and abroad.

Oilseed Rape Trial Results are Released

The International Milling Directory can reveal the results of the Winter Oilseed Rape Trial Results from the East & West and Northern regions of the UK. As oilseed processing and raw materials make up many of our listed members’ activities such as: ADM Oilseeds, InstaPro International, Vantage Organic Foods Pvt Ltd, these results hint at a very relevant trend towards a good harvest this year, more so in the Northern region but generally positive mean results. The result tables from their website are below:-

Cereals 2014 and the Milling Wheat Challenge 2014

nabim

nabim – Group 1 Breadmaking Wheat Varieties

CEREALS 2014

Cereals UK was ye again a great event, and some of the best-known UK companies joined together to exhibit at a new location near Cambridge, UK.

An expected total of 26,000 visitors to over 500 stands made this annual outdoors exhibition a great time for all. In the “Post-Harvest Technologies” sections there were some great displays of machinery, products and services. The International Milling Directory was distributed to many visitors and exhibitors there. Some of the stands we visited were: HGCA, nabim, Bayer CropScience, Chief Industries UK, DanCorn, Guttridge, Cropmech, Bentall Rowlands and Satake.

The new animal feed section at HGCA’ s stand was of great interest to us at the International Milling Directory. There were some great pieces of information at the animal feed section, one advertised fact that 57% of UK wheat goes to animal feed seemed to be a very high number, that was assured to be true!

nabim also were hosted again in the HGCA stand, they were handing out 500 gram bags of flour at their stand. The UK grown and milled strong white bread flour was produced using nabim Group 1 breadmaking wheat varieties and was a great freebie.

MILLING WHEAT CHALLENGE 2014

nabim, supported by HGCA, announced the three farmer finalists for the 2014 Milling Wheat Challenge at the Cereals Event on Wednesday 11th June. Now in its fifth year, the aim of the Challenge is to find the country’s best milling wheat grower.

The 2014 finalists are:

  • Robert Chapman, South Lodge Farm, Barnwell, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
  • Rick Davies, Newton Lodge, Clifton Reynes, Buckinghamshire
  • Joseph Edwards, Boddington Estates, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire

(Photo l-r: Finalist Rick Davies, his father Mike, finalist Robert Chapman, his father Bob and finalist Joseph Edwards)

As in previous years, the standard of the entries has remained very high and the judges had a tough job selecting the finalists.

Each of the finalists farm significant areas with wheat as their main crop. All three are forward-thinking, very technically competent and consistently grow quality crops of bread-making wheats.

The Challenge has become established as a formal recognition by Britain’s flour millers of how the country’s best growers combine attention to detail with end-customer awareness and business acumen to create a win: win for the whole wheat chain.

Judging of the three finalists will take place in June and July when visits will be made to their farms. Detailed discussions will take place with the growers themselves, their crops will be walked and inspections made of any storage facilities.

The judges for 2014 are Martin Savage from nabim, HGCA Head of Regional Development Richard Laverick and Mark Ireland, a Lincolnshire farmer and “Farmers Weekly Arable Farmer of the Year 2009”.

The finalists, together with leaders from the UK wheat supply chain, will be invited to a celebration dinner hosted by nabim at the Ritz Hotel in London where the winning grower will be announced.

HGCA and nabim: 2014 Milling Wheat Challenge annouced!

The International Milling Directory’s sister magazine, Grain & Feed Milling Technology, covered the Milling Wheat Challenge last year. There is excitement in the announcement of this year’s competition. Launched by nabim and HGCA in the United Kingdom once again, we hope many users of the International Milling Directory appreciate this news and content; a blog from the HGCA below:–

nabim, supported by HGCA, has launched the fifth Milling Wheat Challenge competition to find the UK’s outstanding grower of quality milling wheat.

Martin Savage, nabim‘s Trade Policy Manager said “The competition has gone from strength to strength. In the past four years, it has discovered an amazing group of finalists who are at the forefront of UK wheat production. The winners have each shown that they are progressive in their business as well as their crop husbandry and that they can consistently grow quality crops of bread-making wheats.”

The competition has become established as a way for Britain’s flour millers to formally recognise the value of the country’s best growers to the processing trade.

We are committed to working with UK wheat growers and we are looking for farmers who combine attention to detail with end-customer awareness and business acumen to create a win: win for the whole wheat chain” Martin said.

“Growing quality wheat consistently is a difficult task which requires best practice in growing, storage and delivery to meet the exacting standards of the milling trade.”

HGCA is pleased to be supporting the competition as a way of promoting best practice in both the growing and the marketing of milling wheat. Richard Laverick from HGCA said: “Our aim is to find growers who have a good understanding of their end market, their business costs and an ability to reflect both in their marketing of milling wheat.”

Entry forms are available via the nabim and HGCA websites. The closing date for entries will be Friday, 2 May 2014 and the three finalists will be announced at the Cereals Event on 11 June. On-farm judging of the finalists will take place in late June. The competition judges are Martin Savage from nabim, Richard Laverick from HGCA and Mark Ireland, a Lincolnshire Farmer and former “Farmers Weekly Arable Farmer of the Year”.

The three finalists in the 2013 Milling Wheat Challenge were Stephen Craggs, East Close Farm, Sedgefield, Stockton-on-Tees, James Loder-Symonds, Denne Hill Farm, Womenswold, Canterbury, Kent and Nick & David Philip, Church Farm, Waltham St Lawrence, Reading, Berkshire. The overall winner was Stephen Craggs.

Mark Ireland said that “All three finalists were very good producers of quality wheat” and he added that what set Stephen Craggs apart was his total commitment to detail. “Despite faming with a challenging climate he has developed a simple yet robust system to produce consistent quality. On top of a very strong business, his technical insight and attention to detail gave him the edge. He also has a very rational approach to risk management as well as a proactive approach to going beyond the basics of what a miller wants from a grower.”

Martin Savage urged growers to enter the competition, explaining: “The Challenge is a great way for growers to engage with the supply chain. UK flour millers remain committed to our farmers.”

The finalists, their partners and an additional guest, together with leaders from the UK wheat supply chain, will be invited to a celebration dinner hosted by nabim in October at the Ritz Hotel in London where the overall winner will be announced.
